ISO 14000 - Being Good Stewards to Our Environment
ISO 14000 requires that we operate in an environmentally friendly way. It's not just about being responsible to our environment - it's also about saving you money and building a credible, responsible culture with our employees. No culture of quality, like ours, can withstand the test of time unless we demonstrate our commitment to things larger than ourselves.
It's for these reasons that Richmond Cold Storage is in the process of becoming ISO 14000 certified. This certification imposes on us the same rigorous processes and measurement requirements as the other ISO certifications, and motivates our people to operate in a more environmentally-responsible manner.
These meticulous standards will result in many improvements:
- Some machinery and equipment operates more efficiently during off hours, requiring a smaller "carbon footprint."
- We installed energy saving lighting systems to control energy costs.
- When new equipment is acquired, we always opt for energy efficient models.
- We are dedicated to recycling plastics, paper and batteries.
- We require the vendors from whom we buy materials and services to be environmentally responsible in the way they operate, and to inform us of their performance in this area.
Our IRPS facility, located on the port at Norfolk International Terminal, recently received the Gold Award from the Virginia Port Authority for its efforts at being good to our environment.
